About Puerto Galera and its History

Information

The coastal town of Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro is less than four hours away from Metro Manila via bus and ferry, making it a relatively near and cheaper place to reach compared to Boracay. It is famous among tourists for its many beaches where hotels and resorts are scattered. The surrounding body of water is home to diverse species of fishes and corals, which makes it ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. In fact, the area has been declared a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. The most popular areas are the Sabang Village and White Beach, where the night life with fire dancers should not be missed.

Brief History

Puerto Galera literally means “Port of Galleons”. Since the 10th century, the port has served as a safe stopover for many seafarers, most especially when the galleon trade was popular. Until now, the Muelle Bay is a regular stopover for dock repairs as well as a trading spot with the locals.
