About Makati and its History
InformationMakati City is the busiest and most important business district in the Philippines. Skyscraping commercial buildings and residential condominiums are located close to each other here. Almost every corner has a restaurant or a coffee shop to cater to the countless offices around. Aside from these, three of Metro Manila’s gigantic upper-class shopping malls can be found in Makati, namely Greenbelt, Glorietta, and Rockwell Center.
The financial capital of the Philippines is also home to the rich and the famous. Nestled within the villages are the most elite country clubs in the Philippines, like the Manila Polo Club, Golf Course and Manila Golf Club.
Brief HistorySan Pedro de Macati, as it was known in the past, was discovered by Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1578. The Spaniards built two of the oldest churches in the country here – the Nuestra Señora de Gracia and Church of Saints Peter and Paul.
After the Second World War, Makati’s economy grew rapidly. The value of real estate properties boomed, mostly due to the help of the Ayala family. What was once a worthless swamp is now a bustling city complete with malls, offices, hospitals, churches, schools, and much more.
