Information

Not to be confused with Cagayan Valley in Luzon, Cagayan de Oro, or the "City of Golden Friendship", is considered as one of the most picturesque cities in the Philippines. It is known by many nicknames such as "Gateway to Northern Mindanao" because of its location. It is also known as the "City of Whitewater Rafting and River Trekking” for the rafting and trekking activities available in the area. Another nickname is "ICT Goldmine of the Philippines" for the Information Technology business potential of the city. Lastly, CDO is called "A City in Bloom, in Blossom and in BOOM!" because it is admired as a highly progressive city.

Brief History

Spanish missionaries came to Cagayan in 1622. Since the locals have not embraced Islam, many of them were quickly converted into Christians. This caused many religious wars in the territory, and the Christians had to move uphill, to the present location of St. Augustine Cathedral. CDO was dominated by Spaniards in the 18th century.
